About the Awards

Figure SkaterSkaters in the Halifax Skating Club are eligible for a number of Awards and Bursaries recognizing skating accomplishments as well as the desire and initiative to succeed and advance in skating.

Some awards and bursaries come from Skate Canada; others are administered directly by the Halifax Skating Club. Awards and Bursaries are available for all levels of skating. Skaters may apply directly for some awards and bursaries; others are awarded based on the coaches' recommendations. Announcements and deadlines for applications are posted on our News and Events page.

If you would like to nominate a skater for an award, please review the criteria below and send an email to the Club President Monica Beck with your nomination and a brief summary on why you feel the skater deserves the award.

Description of Club Awards

BMO Canskater of the Year

This medal recognizes a skater, under the age of 8, who has demonstrated talent and passion for the sport of figure skating.   Emphasis is on talent and skill achievement coupled with the spirit of a champion.   These skaters have the desire to continue and succeed in skating.

BMO Canskate Champions

Two medals are awarded to CanSkaters, under the age of 8, who demonstrate the qualities that embody the "Spirit of a Champion": Commitment, Perseverance, Dedication, Passion, Triumph and Talent.   Emphasis is on personal achievement or accomplishments

Starskater of the Year

A currently registered athlete of any age who has passed at least one test in at least three of the disciplines within the Skate Canada STARSkate program (i.e. Skating Skills, Dance, Free Skating and Artistic). The winner of this award should reflect the essence of the STARSkate program itself: participation, achievement, personal success, display spirit and passion for the sport, striving for new goals; and balance (within skating and in other areas of life).

Program Assistant of the Year

This award is given to the Program Assistant who has at least two years of Program Assistant experience and has made a significant contribution to his/her club. He or she imparts the passion, spirit and triumph of skating on all of those with whom they work.  It is felt that the individual will make a long-term contribution to the sport of figure skating in Canada in a coaching or volunteer role.

Jack Poteri Award

This award is given to a skater for excellence in volunteer work at the HSC; in honour of our arena manager, Jack Poteri.  Jack has been a supporter of figure skating in the Halifax metro area since 1967 and the HSC wishes to honour Jack for his contributions to our skating family and has chosen to present this award in his honour on an annual basis.  Consideration is given to a skater who exemplifies the best in club spirit, through their dealings with the public, their club-mates and especially the younger skaters.  He or She will have an encouraging attitude, show courtesy at all times, and display overall good sportsmanship – a true representative of the best of being a HSC skater.

Robyn Leet Award

Robyn was a CanSkater at the HSC’s Saint Mary’s University program.  She had finished her Canskate badges and planned to start Starskate in the fall, when tragically a car accident claimed her life.  Her parents requested that a memorial donation be made to the club.  Each year this award is given to a 1st or 2nd year Starskater who plans to continue with the sport.

Flemming - Langille Bursary

Awarded each year to a skater in the Halifax Skating Club. Skaters should be interested in continuing their skating career to higher levels. The bursary is open to skaters working on their Junior Bronze Skills or higher. Application is by letter to the Flemming-Langille Bursary Committee describing the skater's accomplishments in skating and future skating plans. The deadline for applications is February 1st. Previous applicants and recipients are eligible to re-apply. The bursary will be awarded at the Annual General meeting of the Halifax Skating Club.

1995 Canadian Legacy Bursaries

Halifax Skating club and the Dartmouth Skating club co-hosted a very successful 1995 Canadian Figure Skating Championships, resulting in a surplus of profits.  A committee was established to manage this money to best benefit membership development.  Bursaries are awarded at the end of each season to skaters who have completed the Canskate badge level, and are moving on to Starskate.
